Description: The historic and vibrant City of Fredericksburg is seeking a highly qualified person to fill the full-time position of Director of Public Transit. Duties and Responsibilities: The Director is responsible for managing all aspects of a 30-bus, 20-route/route deviation service in the City and the surrounding counties of Spotsylvania and Stafford. FREDericksburg Regional Transit (FRED) employs approximately 90 full- and part-time drivers, mechanics, planning and administrative staff with a budget of approximately $5,000,000 annually. FRED has completed major capital projects over the past decade that include a passenger terminal, maintenance facility and operations center. The Director reports to the Assistant City Manager, but has full authority to manage all FRED operations, planning, personnel, government and customer relations and financial affairs. Work involves managing system safety and security; planning, programming and budgeting for current and future services; planning for and procurement of facilities and equipment; applying for and managing Federal and State grants; ensuring compliance with Federal and State regulatory requirements; hiring, training, evaluating and disciplining staff; communicating with City Council and County Boards, the business and academic communities, and the public; developing policies and procedures; and managing the organization of full-time and part-time employees. The Director serves as a member of the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team and will be expected to play an integral role daily in advancing the City’s “one team for a great community” motto.
Qualifications: Applicants should have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and six (6) years of transit/transportation experience with financial/budgeting, media relations, government affairs/liaison and supervisory experience. Applicants with equivalent combinations of education and/or experience will be considered.
